World Record 60mH by Holloway and Second Fastest Indoor 800m Ever
It slowed down quite a bit this week. We only had ONE world record and several top ten performances ever…
One week ago, at the World Indoor Tour in Torun, Poland, British athlete Elliot Giles threw down the gauntlet in the 800m. Finishing in a huge lifetime best (1:43.63), new British record, and establishing himself as the second-fastest 800m runner indoor of all-time, the 26-year-old seemed a bit stunned.
As he crossed the line and saw the time, he couldn’t help but smile and keep shrugging his shoulders as if to say, “Hell if I know..“
He took a commanding lead with about half a lap to go and continued to pull away, driving his knees and pounding away at the track. The two athletes behind him also set lifetime bests in likely the fastest indoor 800m race we’ve ever seen. To run this fast and cap off a whirlwind of a season, he not only signaled to the rest of the world to watch out — he shouted it!
As we came off some impressive highs over the last two weeks, including the 800m romping, just hours ago Grant Holloway (23) shot out of the blocks for the 60mH and did what we’ve been waiting for months. He was able to knock down Colin Jackson’s 1994 world record in an impressive fashion.
Generally, when you see a world record in a short sprint, it leaves you wondering just how slow everyone else ran — the gap is just that apparent. Well, it certainly seemed it was going to be fast by that standard, and he did not disappoint.
While he was able to shave 0.01 seconds off the world record, Holloway has been flirting with it for the last few weeks. Seven of his last ten races have been under 7.38 seconds! It’s certainly been one of the most dominant 60mH seasons for this former University of Florida standout. This season for him was very reminiscent of Christian Coleman’s world record 60m dash season of 2018.
