Ryan Crouser Cements GOAT Status With WR
If you’re a Track and Field fan, we’ve entered the treasured cycle. For us, an Olympic year is our Super Bowl and it only comes once every 4 (5 this time) years.
We’re mere weeks away from the Tokyo Olympic Games and almost every country around the globe is holding their Olympic Trials in order to determine who will represent them in the purest form of athletic feats.
The United States is no different, and today marks the first day of our own Olympic Trial. Boy did it not disappoint.
While most of the events are just getting underway with their preliminary rounds, there were two finals that took place. But in one particular final, we lit up the stage and showcased a new world record.
Ryan Crouser (28), the defending Olympic Champion opened up his competition in dominant fashion, leading the entire way into finals by well over two feet. But on his very first throw in the final round, Crouser launched the 16-pound shot out to a record-breaking 76 feet, 8¼ inches (23.37m).
The previous record, held by American Randy Barnes, has stood for over 31 years. Today it finally expired and not by a small margin. Crouser’s throw was nearly ten inches further! When the shot left his hands, he immediately knew the throw was exactly what he was looking for.
For those of you who have followed the event closely over the last two years, you knew it could be under threat, and has been for quite some time. Crouser set the world indoor record earlier this year and just a few weeks ago, threw one out over 23 meters to become only the third person in history to do so.
Compatriots Joe Kovacs (reigning World Champion) and Payton Otterdahl, will join Crouser overseas next month representing the US.
